Lot 26: The Last Supper
I stuff Jesus’ head with creaking cotton wool, packed as tightly as theology; a last act of worship.
I insert his bleeding heart, so carefully, a painful knot of parched yarn, raggedy beard a cunning disguise;
I loop strands tenderly through peached purl-one plain-one, so he can be with his disciples for one more day.
My hands tremble a catechism as I knit the final tiny tablecloth: any dropped stitch a trespass—I join
thirteen figures together, balancing them as tenderly as soft china teacups across my lap. Lead me not into—
I turn shamefaced Judas away. The Messiah stretches out his woolen arms to me. I am his Weeping Mother and his God.
